What’s the difference between hypnosis and sleep?

Posted by admin in sleep hypnosis on 05 25th, 2010

When you hypnotize someone, they’re in a deep sleep and when they wake up you could help them get over fears, etc. Isn’t the deep sleep the same as REM sleep? Sources?

When you hypnotize someone, they’re NOT in a deep sleep. They’re in a hypnotic trance. The trance doesn’t have to be deep at all. Ever read a book and look at the time and wonder where the last several hours have gone? Or drive home on autopilot and not remember the drive? Those are examples of being in a hypnotic state.

i have depersonalisation and i wonder do relaxation or hypnosis techniques help with this condition?

… or are hypnosis methods endangering the condition further?

There’s a good blog on depersonalisation here: http://anxietynomore.co.uk/blog/?p=5#comments

From what the author says it seems like ignoring the symptom as much as possible is the way to go and therefor relaxation or hypnotherapy shouldn’t harm you… but don’t expect a quick miracle cure ;-)

Good luck!

If you sleep during hypnosis will it still give the desired effect?

Hello

Yes it will still work, the only thing that will get in the way is any subconscious blocks you may have.

Is it normal to feel nauseous, short of breath and shaky throughout hypnosis, when relaxation was intended?

Most definitely not. It may be that the therapist used language during the pre-induction talk that did not allay any deep-seated fears you may have about being hypnotized and as a result you were not able to allow the induction to be effective. Most people experience hypnosis as an extremely relaxed state during which their limbs may feel exceptionally heavy or light and their minds are simultaneously focused and relaxed.

I would suggest that you try a gentle self-hypnosis session such as the one on www.mesmerizedmind.com where you can feel completely in control of the whole process and see how you respond. If this is successful, you could try another hypnosis session and see if you have a better experience.
